Susan Yuen - LMFT

Susan Yuen is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist providing counseling services to children, adolescents, families and individuals in her private practice in Sacramento CA .

Work History

I have over 13 years of experience in the mental health field working with a wide range of populations.  Some of the populations I have worked with include special needs preschool children, youth in psychiatric hospitals and youth that have histories of incarceration,  foster youth, parents who have children in foster care, parents with substance abuse issues, individuals with life adjustment issues, anxiety, depression and with low performing students in the school system.

Education- Training
I received a MA in Community Counseling from the University  of Northern Colorado with a specialization in children and family therapy.  I am licensed in California as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC#43357).  In addition to a Masters in Community Counseling, I have received extensive post graduate training in attachment therapy for children with disorganized attachments, specialized treatment for children who have been abused (art therapy, sand tray therapy, and play therapy), trauma treatment (EMDR), strategic therapy/solution focused therapy and family/relationship building.  In addition to being a LMFT, I also am a credentialed school counselor.

Therapeutic Approach
Therapy can be scary as you make your most inner thoughts, fears, and dreams known to another person. I know from personal experience how therapy can be frightening, but once you build a trusting relationship with your therapist you will be amazed at how much better your life can be. My theory of choice is generally family systems therapy, Attachment Therapy, EMDR , Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and/or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.  However, each individual is unique and there is not a magic bullet approach that works for everyone.  Your treatment will be customized to fit your specific needs and goals in order to address your current challenges.  With compassion and understanding, I will work with you to help you build on your strengths and attain the personal growth you are committed to accomplishing.

Personal History
I was born in Atlanta , Georgia and I have gradually made my way to California over the past several years. I have lived in California for  eight years and I have fallen in love with the beauty of the California coast and the picturesque mountains throughout the state.   California is also where I met the love of my life, my husband. When we are not working we love to spend time at the coast or relaxing at home with our standard poodle.

I’ve known from a very young age that I wanted to work in the helping profession as a therapist.  Helping others overcome the hardships of their lives is my passion.  Through my own personal challenges, I’ve grown as an individual and as a therapist.  I know what it is like to feel overwhelmed with sadness, grief, and anger and to have a fear of what tomorrow will bring.  I also know what it is like to move past those feelings and to give life a second chance.  I am truly grateful for the challenges I have encountered as they have made me a stronger person and have enhanced my ability to assist others.

I look forward to talking to you soon.
